IT use leads to workers being more productive and greater degrees of employment for both skilled and unskilled workers, though the ratio of skilled to unskilled labour increases with IT use. Most importantly, IT using companies pay more to workers and employees for lesser hours of work, i.e., the quality of jobs is bettered with IT use. One important conjecture we could make is that IT could be perceived as a substitute for lack of resources and physical connectivity to markets.


About the Author


Shubhashis Gangopadhyay got his Ph.D. in Economics from Cornell University, USA, in 1983. He joined the Indian Statistical Institute and taught there till 2002. He took over as founder-director of IDF, an independent research organization, in 2002. He was awarded a doctorate (honoris causa) by the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, in October 2006. He is the Chief Editor of the Journal of Emerging Market Finance (Sage Publications) and an associate editor of the Journal of Financial Stability (Elsevier). He is a member of the Board ofthe Centre for Analytical Finance (Indian School of Business, Hyderabad), Bankruptcy Task Force of IPD, Columbia University and the International Advisory Board of the Centre for Law and Economics of Financial Markets (Copenhagen Business School). He has been a member of South Asia Chief Economist's Advisory Council of the World Bank. He is also the founder-President of the Society for the Promotion of Game Theory and its Applications. Manisha G. Singh, has a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Maryland at College Park. U.S.A. she is an applied economist with research in development, labor and macroeconomics. Ongoing research at the India Development Foundation includes studies on education, skills and human resources stock and capital. Recent research is related to employment adjustment and firm dynamics, employment opportunities in India, the use of IT products and senrices in India, innovation in India, skilling, education and poverty in India. Her consulting assignments include studies on India and on international comparisons, chiefly with The World Bank, Washington D.C., U.S.A. Her work is published in refereed journals.
