Details: ईसा की प्रथम शताब्दी में महाकवि इलंगोवन रचित तमिल महाकाव्य ‘शिलप्पदिकारम्’ भारतीय साहित्य की एक अनमोल रचना है। प्रस्तुत उपन्यास उक्त महाकाव्य की कथावस्तु पर आधारित पहली हिन्दी कृति है, जिसमें दक्षिण भारत के ऐतिहासिक जीवन का विस्तृत और विश्वसनीय चित्रण हुआ है। तत्कालीन पृष्ठभूमि को सँजोने में लेखक ने इतिहास-ग्रंथों का अवगाहन करके अपने चित्रणों को यथासम्भव प्रामाणिक बनाने की चेष्टा की है और इस प्रकार उक्त महाकाव्य पर आधारित होते हुए भी यह प्रायः एक स्वतन्त्र रचना बन गई है। स्वयं लेखक के शब्दों में: ‘‘घिसी-पिटी थीम होने पर भी पापुलर उपन्यास के लिए मुझे वह अच्छी लगी; मैं अपने दृष्टिकोण से उसमें नवीनता देख रहा था।’’ मिली-जुली सरल भाषा में लिखे गये इस उपन्यास का यह छठा संस्करण पाठकों के सामने है, जो इसकी लोकप्रियता का अकाट्य प्रमाण है।
