About the Book
This commemorative volume in honor of Professor S.P. Nagendra compiles a selection of his most significant and insightful contributions to Indian sociology. The essays in this collection revolve around central themes such as:

  • Traditions and their moral and ritual foundations

  • Culture and its implications for policy

  • Development and its sociological ramifications

  • A personal tribute to Professor D.P. Mukerji, one of the founding figures of Indian sociology

Professor Nagendra viewed ancient Indian society as a model of normative civilization, based on hierarchical ordering and deeply rooted in philosophical traditions. He argued that societal change in such a framework is organic, evolving from one order to another. Using Dilthey’s concept of interpretive understanding, he provides deep insights into the concept of culture and its relevance in both classical and contemporary discourse. His analysis also includes rich perspectives on the debates surrounding tradition vs. modernity, making the volume a compelling read.

This book serves as a valuable resource for sociologists, scholars of Indian culture, and general readers interested in understanding the complex layers of Indian society through the lens of an eminent academic.
