Description:
Utpaladeva (late 9th – early 10th century) was a renowned philosopher and mystic of the Kashmir Shaivism tradition, specifically the School of Recognition (Pratyabhijna), which focuses on non-dualism. His foundational work, Ishvarapratyabhijna Karikas (Verses on the Recognition of the Lord), alongside three significant philosophical works known as Siddhitrayi, helped establish the core philosophy of the school. Utpaladeva was also the guru of the famous philosopher Abhinavagupta.
Beyond his philosophical contributions, Utpaladeva was deeply devoted to bhakti (devotion), which he expressed through his Shivastotravali (Hymns to Shiva). These hymns reflect his intense devotion and mystical experiences, depicting the longing for the Lord and the non-dual union with Shiva. The verses in Shivastotravali are arranged in 20 chapters or Stotras, and they stand as some of the most poetic and profound mystical literature in the world.
Swami Lakshman Joo (1907–1991), the last Shaiva Acharya of Kashmir, was deeply connected to Utpaladeva's teachings and had a special affection for the Shivastotravali. He expounded on it extensively in multiple languages, including Kashmiri, Hindi, and English. His edition of the Shivastotravali, with commentary by Kshemaraja, is regarded as the standard text. This volume presents Swami Lakshman Joo's exposition of the Shivastotravali in English for the first time, offering valuable insight into the integration of bhakti and non-duality in Kashmir Shaivism.

- Students and scholars of Kashmir Shaivism, Indian philosophy, and mysticism
