About the Book:
Radhakrishna (1904) by Panuganti Lakshmi Narasimha Rao (1865-1940) is held in high esteem as a landmark, a trendsetter, and a champion of the renaissance. The play, much ahead of its time, sought to elevate the image of Radha, who was understood until then as nothing more than a paramour, to Krishna's consort and co-presiding goddess of Goloka, a heavenly realm. Based on the tenets of Gaudiya Vaishnavism, the play portrays Radha's simple Bhakti (devotion) evolving into Mahabhava (the highest culmination of love), a state typically associated only with Radha by Vaishnava scholars. Panuganti was inspired to write this play by Ashutosh Mukherji's Lord Gauranga.
