About the Book

The non-governmental sector has often been overlooked in academic circles, despite its growing influence in areas like health, education, and rural development. This book sheds light on the increasing role of NGOs in public services and their expanding advocacy and campaigning efforts at both local and international levels. Despite the growing presence of NGOs, much remains unclear regarding their impacts, especially in South Asia.

Key themes of the book include:

  • The quality of services provided by NGOs and the perceptions of service users.

  • The growth of non-profit but increasingly commercialized service providers.

  • The management challenges that differentiate NGOs from other types of organizations.

  • The changing accountability relationships between citizens and governments.

  • The international dimensions of the growth of NGOs, particularly in the context of neo-liberal economic processes.

This book tackles crucial issues like funding, democratization, governance, and strategies for improving sustainability and accountability within NGOs. With contributions from leading experts, the book aims to strengthen the connection between NGO researchers and practitioners, enhancing the potential of NGOs in contributing to development processes.
