About the Book

The Mahabhasyapradipoddyota by Nagesabhatta, a prolific grammarian and scholar of the 17th-18th century, is an insightful commentary on Kaiyata's gloss of the Mahabhasya by Patanjali. This book provides an in-depth study of Nagesabhatta's supercommentary, offering a valuable resource for those interested in ancient Sanskrit grammar and commentarial literature. The book is structured in three parts:

  • Part I: General Overview introduces the author and the key features of the Mahabhasyapradipoddyota, highlighting Nagesabhatta's contribution to the study of Patanjali's Mahabhasya.

  • Part II: Analytical Examination dives deeper into Nagesabhatta's methodology, exploring his elucidation of the Mahabhasya, elucidation of the Pradipa, his citations of other views, and his criticism of Kaiyata.

  • Part III: Observations provides an exposition of Nagesabhatta's views on essential topics, offering a critical background to his assertions in the Uddyota and concludes with an evaluation of his work.

Published under the Sri Garib Dass Oriental Series, this work is a critical academic resource that sheds light on one of the most influential texts in the Sanskrit grammatical tradition.
