About the Book
Modernization, Globalization and Social Transformation is the first volume in a four-part festschrift honoring Professor Yogendra Singh, one of India's most distinguished sociologists. This volume traces Professor Singh’s intellectual journey, highlighting his deep engagement with Western sociological thought and its application in the Indian context. It sheds light on the evolving challenges and transformations faced by Indian sociology, particularly in the era of globalization.
Bringing together critical essays by renowned scholars, the book explores major themes such as modernization, globalization, and their intersections with sociological issues like marginalization, social movements, middle-class expansion, consumer culture, technological change, ethnicity, global society, and the risk society. It also delves into the philosophical debates on modernity and post-modernity, offering both conceptual clarity and applied perspectives.
This volume not only reflects on Professor Singh’s vast contributions but also serves as a foundational text for understanding how Indian society and sociological inquiry are adapting to global shifts.
