About the Book
This extensively revised and updated edition explores the diverse perspectives that shape the understanding of Indian society—a society that has evolved from monarchy through feudalism and colonialism to a pluralistic, democratic, industrial, and capitalistic order. Through historical, structural, cultural, and subaltern lenses, the book offers a multidimensional analysis of India’s social fabric.
Prominent Indian sociologists and thinkers such as D.D. Kosambi, Romila Thapar, G.S. Ghurye, M.N. Srinivas, S.C. Dube, A.R. Desai, B.R. Ambedkar, and many others are profiled in this volume, along with Western scholars like Louis Dumont and McKim Marriott, whose work in India provided valuable theoretical insights. The book addresses key sociological frameworks: historical, indological, structural-functional, dialectical-historical, cultural, civilizational, and subaltern.
The latest edition includes a new chapter on D.N. Dhanagare in the Marxist Perspective section and two important additions in the Contemporary Discourses section:
-
Globalization: Indian Perspective
-
Privatization of Education: Challenges Ahead
This book is a vital resource for students, scholars, educators, and researchers looking for an in-depth understanding of Indian sociological thought.
