About the Book

This book explores an alternative understanding of Indian foreign policy, analyzing it through both theoretical frameworks and case studies. The evolving trajectory of India's foreign policy is highlighted, with a shift from idealism towards instrumentality and materialism. The book critically examines this key change in India's foreign policy stance.

The text is structured around two major arguments. First, the political power of India's ruling group is influenced by its ability to address global issues, particularly those of urgent concern. This capability is shaped by the institutional and ideational factors that drive the political class and its dominant discourses. Second, the book delves into the specifics of foreign policy decision-making in India. It raises important issues and challenges that India faces as an emerging power in contemporary global politics.
