About the Book
In the context of an economic crisis and growing inequality, Decentralisation and Local Government Finance revisits existing economic models and policies. The book highlights the global trend towards centralising economic and fiscal powers at the national level, rather than empowering local governments. In contrast, the author explores Gandhian principles of decentralisation and local government finance, arguing that Gandhi's belief in local autonomy is essential for true democracy.
The book compares Gandhian decentralisation ideologies with modern theories of fiscal federalism or fiscal decentralisation in public finance, proposing that decentralisation can help address pressing issues like inequality, human development, environmental sustainability, unemployment, and urbanisation. Through Gandhian values, it advocates for local financial systems prioritising community needs and autonomy, rethinking fiscal policies from a humanitarian perspective. This book aims to provide policy insights for fostering more inclusive and responsive governance structures.
