About the Book:
The emergence of the middle class in modern India is largely credited to the introduction of English education during British rule. The middle class has always been a focal point for academicians, researchers, and policy makers, acting as a balancing force in society due to its intermediary position.
Post-1990, the urban middle class drew significant attention from both policy makers and multinational corporations, primarily due to its growing consumption potential. However, the conventional portrayal of this class as flourishing, hypocritical, and self-centered is often misleading and incomplete.
This book explores the urban middle class in transition, analyzing the crisis it faces across socio-economic, cultural, and psycho-political dimensions. With Hyderabad as a case study, it examines the causes and consequences of these changes, providing an objective and research-driven perspective. It is an insightful resource for students, sociologists, and urban studies scholars seeking to understand the evolving nature of India’s middle class.
