About the Book
The administrative structure of India has evolved significantly since its colonial past, where the focus was primarily on maintaining law and order and collecting taxes. Post-independence, the role of bureaucracy shifted from serving the British Empire to facilitating democratic governance and development in a newly independent India. This transformation posed the critical question: Could the colonial bureaucracy effectively contribute to a socialist democratic state committed to socio-economic progress?
The book explores the complex relationship between political administration and bureaucracy in India. It provides an in-depth study of the evolution of bureaucratic administration and the pivotal role that bureaucracy has played in development administration since independence, with a specific focus on Karnataka.
The study looks into the impact of significant economic reforms such as liberalisation, privatisation, and globalisation on Indian administration. It also discusses the development administration in Karnataka, proposing a blueprint for reinvigorating the state's development administration processes. This work is a critical resource for students of public administration, political science, and administrators, and will also appeal to politicians interested in the interplay of governance and development.
