Book Description:
About the Book
Birds in a Cage (Koondinul Pakshikal), published in 1995, explores the fundamental question that man often faces – From where has he come? Where is he going? What are the reasons for the agonies and frustrations we experience during our brief time on Earth? What does Bhogi, the common man, want from everyday life? Shouldn’t he be satisfied with his wife, children, and job?

Neela Padmanabhan delves into the spiritual realm while seeking answers to these existential questions in this important novel.

About the Author
Neela Padmanabhan (b. 1938) gained widespread recognition with his novel Talaimuraigal (1968). A masterful writer in both Tamil and Malayalam, Padmanabhan draws upon a wide variety of life situations and seeks to uncover the social truths embedded within them. Over a prolific career spanning forty years, he has created numerous unforgettable characters who have become integral to Tamil literary culture.

Padmanabhan has won several prestigious awards, including the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Sahitya Akademi Award for Translation. His works have been translated into multiple Indian and European languages.

M. Vijayalakshmi (b. 1948) studied at Jadavpur University, Kolkata, and Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Her interest in translation grew after encountering the works of new Tamil writers such as Thoppil ‘Meeran, who incorporate local dialects into their narratives. She currently serves as the Librarian at Sahitya Akademi.
