About the Book
This concise study presents the life and literary achievements of Bharatendu Harishchandra (1850–1885), widely regarded as the father of modern Hindi literature and one of the greatest Hindi writers after Tulsidas. Described by Grierson as one of the most celebrated native poets of his time, Bharatendu played a crucial role in popularizing vernacular literature and shaping the modern Hindi literary movement.

Recognized as Hindi’s pioneer dramatist, he also made major contributions to early Hindi journalism. He emerged as one of the first notable Hindi writers of essays, travelogues, biographical sketches, and works dealing with history and antiquities. In addition to his literary prose, Bharatendu composed nearly 3000 devotional songs in a wide range of metres. He is also considered among the earliest poets to write in Khari Boli Hindi, which later became dominant over Brajbhasha.

Despite his short life of only thirty-four years, Bharatendu Harishchandra left a lasting impact on Hindi literature by initiating new literary trends and expanding the scope of modern Hindi writing. This book provides a sensitive and insightful account of his life, personality, and remarkable contributions. Written by Madan Gopal, a noted literary historian and author of Munshi Prem Chand: A Literary Biography, this work helps introduce Bharatendu Harishchandra and modern Hindi literature to English-speaking readers.
