About the Book:
Purnamashi Jani is an eighty-year-old Kandha woman from the district of Kandhamal in Odisha. She is short in height, has grey hair, and is lean and thin. Completely illiterate, she does not know how to read or write, but when she sits in meditation, religious lyrics flow from her throat endlessly. The subjects of her lyrics are centered around scriptures and epics, religious austerity, spiritual practices, and attainments.
Purnamashi not only recites religious lyrics, but also foretells the future of people in her meditative state and prescribes remedies for their problems. The people of Kandhamal consider her a spiritual wonder.
When asked about her knowledge, Purnamashi says that she knows nothing about Sastras and Purnas (Scriptures and Epics) or various religious issues. According to her, the knowledge and visions she shares come from the Saints of Tadisaru Hill, who speak through her. She serves as their human medium, and without their presence, she cannot deliver any religious lyrics or speak about the solutions to the problems.
