Book Description

Introduction
Indian children's literature has been rich since ancient times. Works like Panchatantra, Hitopadesha, Kathasaritsagara, Jataka Tales, Singhasan Battisi, and Vetal Panchisi have had a widespread influence on world children's literature. The impact of these tales can also be seen in the folklore of various countries.

The uniqueness of Indian children's literature lies in its adaptability, changing with time and epochs. Beginning with the moral tales of Panchatantra, stories involving kings, queens, feudalism, wars, justice, injustice, and poverty vs. wealth have been written. Later, historical tales, stories of heroes, and others followed, inspiring the younger generation. At the same time, tales from the Mahabharata, Ramayana, and the Puranas continued.

After foreign invasions, fairy tales, stories from Arabian Nights, and miraculous tales of fakirs also emerged. Until the 19th century, this influence was still strong. In the early 20th century, English children's stories began to have an impact. The establishment of Christian missionary schools and the new school education system introduced a shift in children's literature.
