About the Book
This book examines the socio-cultural impacts of urban displacement, which occurs as a result of city expansion. Forced displacement leads to deprivation and hardship, significantly altering the social structure, kinship ties, and cultural milieu of affected communities. The study takes an in-depth look at the local social networks and the social conflicts arising between urban organizations and people from various castes and classes. It further investigates the processes of land acquisition, compensation, and its utilization in the resettlement process, highlighting issues related to land procurement, occupational changes, and rehabilitation. India's governmental resettlement and rehabilitation policies are critically reviewed, providing insights into their implications. The book offers a sociological perspective on urban displacement and is an essential contribution to the discourse on urban development approaches in India.
