About the Book

Tribes of North East India: Orality, Migration and Epistemology is a compelling scholarly volume that challenges the mainstream frameworks through which tribal cultures of North East India have traditionally been studied. Edited by K. Kokho, Athikho Kaisü, and Daili Neli, this book revisits indigenous knowledge systems, oral traditions, and migration narratives from the perspective of the native communities themselves.

Divided into three parts—Text and Context, Origin, Migration and Settlement, and Oral Literature: Narratives and Reflections—the book features fourteen thought-provoking chapters. Contributors delve into topics such as indigenous epistemology, folklore methodologies, language-based identity formation, and the evolving role of orality in print culture. Highlighting rich oral traditions including folktales, songs, and myths, this work provides a critical lens through which readers can understand the region’s dynamic cultural tapestry.

This volume serves as a valuable contribution to tribal studies, anthropology, folklore research, and cultural studies. It is particularly useful for scholars, students, and readers who seek a nuanced, insider perspective on the historical and contemporary realities of North East India's diverse tribal communities.
