About the Book
India is home to a rich diversity of ethnic groups, many of which belong to distinct socio-cultural identities. As one of the few nation-states that have made substantial preferential arrangements for its tribal communities, India is committed to the development of these groups. This book, based on an empirical study, critically evaluates the impact of various legislative measures and regulations enacted for the development of tribal communities, particularly in the state of Orissa.
The book provides an anthropological understanding of tribal development and outlines the socio-economic challenges faced by the tribes, such as indebtedness, the excise policy, the land tenure system, and the role of welfare agencies. It also covers the state of vulnerable tribal populations in Orissa and the development programmes aimed at addressing their concerns. The text offers a detailed review of the state’s efforts, as well as an in-depth analysis of the complexities of tribal development in India.
