About the Book
Tribal Development Administration by Vijay Kumar Shrivastava offers a sweeping and analytical account of the evolution of tribal welfare in India, spanning from the pre-independence era of the 1930s to the post-independence period up to the Eleventh Five-Year Plan. Anchored in a historical perspective, the book sheds light on the systemic neglect and subsequent policy interventions aimed at uplifting the tribal communities who constitute 8.6% of India’s population and inhabit around 15% of its landmass.
While tribal studies have become more prominent in recent decades, most available literature remains scattered and partial. This book fills a critical gap by providing a comprehensive, well-researched narrative of tribal development policies, the roles of various administrative frameworks, and the sociocultural realities of tribal life. It critically addresses the slow and fragmented progress of tribal development, underlining the lack of consistent planning, implementation, and monitoring in government initiatives.
The book is structured around key themes including constitutional provisions for Scheduled Tribes, administrative mechanisms, decentralized governance, the role of voluntary organizations, and protective legislative measures. Each chapter presents a grounded analysis based on empirical studies and the author’s direct administrative experience in tribal areas.
This volume is an essential read for sociologists, anthropologists, development professionals, policy-makers, social thinkers, and political leaders invested in the inclusive growth of tribal communities. Its depth and scholarly insight offer valuable guidance for reshaping tribal development into a more purposeful, community-centric model.
