About the Book:
The New Breed, originally published in Punjabi as Naven Lok, is a collection of short stories by Kulwant Singh Virk, which won the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award in 1967. These stories are a tribute to a bold, emerging generation that remains connected to its past while navigating the complexities of modernity.
The tales portray ordinary people grappling with new systems of power and governance, while also adapting to shifting social norms. The stories reflect both the anxiety and excitement of entering a new era, with particular focus on the changing role of women in society. Many of the stories explore how women assert themselves in the workplace or within the household, marking a significant departure from traditional roles.
Although some stories may feel dated when viewed through the lens of the 21st century, they authentically capture the essence of the 1960s. This translation allows readers to experience a taste of that time, evoking nostalgia for an era when life seemed simpler, despite the profound social changes that were unfolding.
