About the Book:
This book addresses the housing security issues faced by rural communities in Uttar Pradesh, India. It explores not just the dwelling units but also vital utility services such as roads, water supply, sewage systems, electricity, and facilities like markets and health centers. The study provides a comparative analysis of both government-supported housing and self-initiated housing programs, highlighting their effectiveness and challenges.
The author argues that housing, particularly in rural settings, plays a crucial role in fulfilling basic needs. Providing low-cost, environmentally friendly housing for the poor could serve as a catalyst for broader economic development, allowing families to invest their time and resources in more productive endeavors. Furthermore, the book demonstrates that free housing programs can directly enhance the real income of asset-poor households by freeing up labor and funds that would otherwise go into building homes.
