About the Book

This comprehensive volume offers a critical insight into the dynamics of regional development and planning in India, with a global perspective. As rapid economic growth increasingly favors certain regions, it intensifies regional disparities, prompting deep concerns among policymakers, planners, and civil society. This book addresses these challenges by exploring the nature, scope, and theories of regional planning, along with practical strategies for balanced development.

It introduces readers to the concept of region, methods of regionalisation, and the application of various economic and spatial development models, while providing detailed analysis of India’s five-year plans, urban development frameworks, and multi-level and decentralized planning mechanisms, including Panchayati Raj Institutions. Special emphasis is placed on planning for sustainable development, supported by real-world case studies from India and abroad.

Designed to serve as a foundational resource for undergraduate and postgraduate geography courses, the book is also highly relevant for aspirants of UPSC and state-level civil services examinations, especially in Geography and General Studies.
