Radical Lace & Subversive Knitting examines the work of a diverse group of contemporary artists who have reformed knitting and lacemaking by experimenting with innovative techniques and materials. The works, which were largely created for an exhibition of the same name at New York's Museum of Arts & Design, engage with a wide range of cultural, social and political issues. In particular, many of the pieces stress the significance of handwork as a symbol of community and communication. The works also epitomize a crucial change in the visual arts inspiring, provocative and radical they challenge our assumptions of art, craft and design, in turn making their classification extremely difficult. The artists, who originate from seven different countries, use a wide range of materials to create knotted or linked structures. In addition to traditional fibers including cotton, wool, silk and polyester, they work with rubber, glass, wire and fiber optics. The works also take on a wide range of forms including freestanding sculptures, architectural interventions, sound and video works and performance art. Beautifully illustrated and written by the Chief Curator of the Museum of Arts and Design, this publication is a celebration of the intelligence, visual acuity and skill that these artists have combined to create things of such aesthetic value.
