The current administrative system in India reflects the synthesis of various administrative cultures, maintaining characteristics from various historical periods. Elements from Todarmal's revenue administration still influence the grassroots-level revenue administration today. On the other hand, key features of the British-era administrative system, including the secretariat, directorates, district administration, police administration, judiciary, and all-India services, remain intact. While there have been necessary modifications, these structures retain their foundational nature.

Post-independence, several democratic changes took place, such as planning systems, Panchayati Raj, elected urban development bodies, the Right to Information, representative officer systems, state services, local services, and large-scale developmental and financial administration structures. The book provides a compilation of writings from experienced administrators and scholars on the nature of administrative systems and their evolution in India.

About the Authors/Editors:

• Ramesh K. Arora: Dr. Arora completed his higher education at Rajasthan University and Kansas University, USA. He has been a Senior Fulbright Fellow at Syracuse University, New York, and has served as Professor and Head of the Department of Public Administration at Rajasthan University. He has authored and edited over 40 books and has been the editor of prestigious journals, such as Prashasnika and Administrative Change.

• Abha Jain: Dr. Jain holds a Ph.D. in Accounting and Statistics from Rajasthan University. After working in teaching and law, she joined the Rajasthan Administrative Service in 1997. She is currently serving as Deputy Director at the Harish Chandra Mathur Rajasthan State Institute of Public Administration, Jaipur. Dr. Jain is also a member of the editorial board for Prashasnika and co-editor for Administration for the Empowerment and Welfare of Women.
