About the Book
India's vast landscapes, forests, and rich biodiversity have historically supported the growth of human and animal populations. However, economic development has often come at the cost of environmental damage due to a lack of long-term planning and foresight. This edited volume addresses the intersection of population, development, and environmental issues in India, particularly in the post-liberalization era. The book contains 12 research papers exploring various aspects of the relationship between these factors, offering policy implications to mitigate environmental degradation and support sustainable development.
The book is divided into three sections:
-
Section I: Population, Poverty, and Environment
This section examines the impact of land use changes, migration, and industrialization on the environment. It explores how population growth and environmental degradation are linked, particularly in the context of rural livelihoods and drought-prone areas. -
Section II: Development versus Environment
This part delves into how development, particularly industrialization and tourism, impacts the environment. Case studies include the bauxite mining in Odisha and the effects of tourism on sustainable urban growth in Karnataka. -
Section III: Urban Growth and Environment
The final section focuses on urbanization and its environmental consequences. It discusses land use changes, migration, and the socio-economic vulnerability of communities living in rapidly urbanizing areas like Kolkata and East Kolkata Wetland.
