About the Book
This book focuses on rural local government in India, with a particular emphasis on Panchayati Raj, which plays a crucial role in promoting social change, economic development, and efficient administration of representative government. Given that rural local government encompasses critical functions such as agriculture, rural industry, family planning, water, irrigation, rural roads, markets, finance, education, health, sanitation, and housing, it is essential for it to be both democratic and effective for the country’s well-being.
The book is divided into three parts:
-
Part One offers an introduction to the subject, especially for those new to the field of local administration in India. It includes a review of earlier systems of local administration and local government that influenced the evolution of Panchayati Raj.
-
Part Two provides a detailed description of the system of Panchayati Raj as it exists in various states of India, covering components such as electoral systems, council organization, staffing, finance, and geographical areas.
-
Part Three discusses some of the significant issues in the system of local government and offers potential solutions.
This book is aimed at students, as well as practitioners and policymakers who work within or are concerned with the workings of Panchayati Raj and local governance. The practical approach will help those who engage with the system to understand how to make it work more effectively.
