Book Description
About the Book
Manmohan Ghose (1869-1924) belonged to a family deeply connected with the nineteenth-century Bengal Renaissance. His maternal great-grandfather was a friend and associate of Raja Rammohun Roy, and his grandfather, Rajnarayan Bose, a pupil of Derozio, was given the title of "Grandfather of Indian Nationalism." Manmohan's two younger brothers, Aurobindo and Barindra, need no special introduction to the Indian public.
Manmohan was educated in England, and his first book of verse, published from Oxford in 1890, received special praise in the Pall Mall Gazette. Oscar Wilde commented, “Mr. Ghose ought some day to make a name in our literature.” However, today very few are familiar with this great poet.
About the Author
It is indeed a proud privilege for Sahitya Akademi to present a monograph on the life of Manmohan Ghose. Srimati Lotika Ghose, the daughter of the poet, has taken great care to depict the life story of her father, enabling readers to understand the poet through his life—his career, personality, sufferings, nobility of character, and love for art and literature.
