About the Book
Globalization, a term first coined in the 1960s, has evolved into one of the most debated and influential concepts of contemporary society. Seen by some as a liberating force that sweeps away boundaries and enriches all it touches, globalization is equally viewed by others as an undesirable force with far-reaching consequences. In this volume, the author delves into the impact of globalization, particularly in the context of Punjab, India, and addresses a range of issues that have surfaced due to this global phenomenon.
The book covers significant topics such as the effect of globalization on labor, agriculture, rural-urban inequalities, natural resources, and housing. It also explores the movement of international labor and its role in the local economy. Additionally, the role of governance and the state in managing these changes is analyzed. Notably, the volume touches upon the sensitive issue of terrorism and its effect on Punjab's social and economic fabric, shedding light on how this conflict impacted the state’s progress.
This collection of papers presents a nuanced exploration of globalization’s consequences, both positive and negative. The integration of regional economies like Punjab into globalizing national economies presents considerable challenges, and the book argues for carefully considered policy prescriptions. It is hoped that this volume will spark debate and focus attention on the pressing concerns raised by the authors.
