About the Book
This insightful book delves into the construction of Dalits as a social, economic, and political category in Indian society. Tracing their historical background, the author explores the enduring struggles faced by Dalits despite efforts by the state to improve their conditions. The book argues that discrimination, exploitation, and atrocities against Dalits continue to be deeply rooted in the concept of "Untouchability," which is entrenched in both rural and urban parts of India. While it may appear as a mindset in urban settings, untouchability is still a tangible reality in rural areas, where physical contact with Dalits is prohibited. The socialization processes pass this tradition down through generations, perpetuating their suffering through forms of discrimination, exploitation, and socio-economic disabilities. The book provides a panoramic view of the conditions Dalits face, touching on aspects like constitutional safeguards, systematic exclusion, and the impact of Naxalism, resistance movements, and the relevance of Ambedkar’s vision in social reconstruction.
