Dr. M.D. Sampath
Dr. M.D. Sampath, born on 15th July 1941, is a distinguished epigraphist and scholar with an extensive academic background. He completed his graduation and post-graduation at Madras University and earned his doctorate from Karnataka University in 1976. Additionally, he holds Post Graduate Diplomas in Geography, Anthropology, and Sanskrit from Madras University.
Dr. Sampath served in various esteemed positions during his career, including as an Epigraphist at the Department of Archaeology, Govt. of Madras, the French Institute of Indology in Pondicherry, the University of Mysore, and the Archaeological Survey of India. He retired as the Director of Epigraphy at the Archaeological Survey of India.
His scholarly contributions include over 100 research papers covering diverse fields such as political history, socio-economic history, religious history, art and architecture, archaeology, onomastics, and epigraphy. Dr. Sampath's expertise in Tamil and Kannada epigraphy, particularly his work on the Epigraphia Carnatica volumes, is well regarded in academic circles.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of epigraphy, he was awarded the General Presidentship and a copper-plate citation in 2005. Dr. Sampath has edited numerous important volumes, including Epigraphia Indica and South Indian Inscriptions volumes, and his work on Indian scripts has led to the development of software for various Indian scripts. His academic career also includes editing several felicitation volumes and delivering lectures on various subjects, such as the origin and orthography of Brahmi scripts.
