It narrates the story of Silas Marner, a weaver in Lantern Yard, which is a small slum in Northern England. As part of a Calvinist congregation, Silas is, one day, accused of stealing their funds while on watch. Even with doubt-ridden evidence, Silas is found guilty. He is further forsaken by the woman whom he was to marry and forced to leave Lantern Yard. He travels South and settles in the village of Raveloe, where he becomes a recluse, living only to work for survival and hoarding his earnings in gold. Silas’s life takes a turn for the worse when Dunstan Cass, the younger son of the town’s biggest landowner, steals his gold.Meanwhile, Dunstan’s elder brother, Geoffrey, is about to marry Nancy, a girl belonging to a higher social class, even though he has a secret relationship with Molly, an opium addict. He even has a 2-year old daughter with Molly. Molly, distraught by Geoffrey’s betrayal, decides to come over to the town and confront him. But, after overdosing on opium, Molly falls dead near Silas’ home. Her daughter moves away into the house, where Silas takes her in and decides to raise her as his own. Having found his reason to live, Silas regains health and embraces life. He names the child Eppie, after his mother. Sixteen years pass and Eppie is a spritely young lady and the apple of Silas’s eye. Meanwhile, Geoffrey, who married Nancy, remains childless, still hiding the existence of Eppie.Silas Marner (Penguin English Library) was published in 2012 by Penguin UK and is available as a paperback.

EAN: 9780141389455

Package Dimensions: 7.7 x 5.0 x 0.7 inches

Languages: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0690/9968/4144/files/penguin-book-default-title-silas-marner-and-hojoki-39032057102640.jpg?v=1753019925
