Sharma is an archaeologist, museologist, and art historian. He holds an M.A. in Ancient Indian History, Culture, and Archaeology from Allahabad University and a DPhil research degree in Art and Architecture of the Lover Clanga-Yamuna Doab Region from the University of Allahabad. He worked as an Antiquities Registering Officer in the Allahabad and Varanasi regions from 1980 to 1985. In 1983-84, he was awarded a Commonwealth Scholarship and pursued his M.A. in Archaeology at the University of London’s Institute of Archaeology, where he excavated at Sussex (UK) and Pincenvent (France) under Dr. Mark Newcomer and Prof. Gourhan.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDr. Sharma participated in excavations at the Sterkfontein Cave in South Africa in 2003-04 under R.J. Clark, where the 3.3 million-year-old Australopithecus skeleton was discovered. He was the head of the Harappan and Prehistoric Collection at the National Museum, New Delhi, from 1985 to 2005, before becoming Associate Professor and Head of Musicology at the National Museum Institute (Deemed University).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDr. Sharma has published over 220 papers and 71 books on topics such as the Harappan Civilization, Prehistoric Art, Gupta and Mauryan Art, and the Saraswati Civilization. He is currently working on a research project focused on the roots of symbols in the Sindhu Saraswati Civilization.
