He left Cambridge without graduating, briefly studied medicine and then turned to writing his first novels,\u003cbr\u003e\nAll the Conspirators and\u003cbr\u003e\nThe Memorial. Between 1929 and 1939 he lived mainly abroad, spending four years in Berlin and writing the novels\u003cbr\u003e\nMr Norris Changes Trains and\u003cbr\u003e\nGoodbye to Berlin on which the musical\u003cbr\u003e\nCabaret was based.
