नवाब के मोदीखाने के कारदार रहे। पत्‍नी का नाम बीबी सुलखनी जी था। बहन का नाम नानकी (गुरु जी की सबसे प्रिय) और जीजा भाई जय राम जी थे। दो पुत्र श्रीचन्द (जन्म 1494 ई.), लखमी चन्द (जन्म 1496 ई.) थे। बड़े पुत्र श्री चन्द उदासीन सम्प्रदाय के संस्थापक हुए लेकिन नानक जी ने उन्हें अपना उत्तराधिकारी बनाने के योग्य नहीं पाया। गुरु जी ने 25 वर्ष बड़ी यात्राओं (उदासियों) द्वारा बगदाद (ईरान) से लेकर ढाका (बाँग्ला देश) तक काश्मीर से लेकर श्रीलंका तक का भ्रमण किया। सभी धर्मों-मतों के विद्वानों के साथ संवाद किया। अन्तिम 18 वर्ष करतारपुर, रावी नदी के तट पर स्वयं बसाये गाँव में रहे। यहीं पर ‘किरत करो (श्रम करो)– वंड छको (बाँट कर खाओ)– नाम जपो’ के सिद्धान्त पर आधारित सिक्ख-पन्थ का प्रवर्तन किया। लंगर-प्रथा का महान संकल्प संगत और पंगत (पंक्ति में सब बराबर) के सिद्धान्त पर स्थापित किया। करतारपुर में ही अपनी समस्त वाणी को मौखिक से लिखित रूप दिया। 15 अन्य सन्तों की चुनिन्दा रचनाओं को मिलाकर गुरु जी ने अपनी वाणी की ‘पोथी’ बनायी जो द्वितीय गुरु अंगद देव जी को सौंपकर अपनी सोच और विचारधारा को मानवता के के लिए रागों पर आधारित वाणी का उच्चारण किया और उसका गायन किया। संगीत के सुरों में जब धुर की वाणी (गुरवाणी) रूपी पदार्थ डाला जाता है तो वह मनुष्य के मन को इस प्रकृति के कर्ता परमात्मा से मिलाप करा देता है। संगीत, हर व्यक्ति की सुरति को गुरवाणी के शब्दों के साथ जोड़ने का माध्यम है। गुरु नानक देव जी द्वारा रचित रागात्मक वाणी ने, सुर और सुरति के संगम अर्थात् कीर्तन ने सज्जन ठग पर ऐसा वार किया कि उसके अन्तर्मन का ठग मर गया। कौड़ा राक्षस पर इस कीर्तन ने ऐसा प्रभाव डाला कि वह देवता-पुरुष बन गया। वली कन्धारी के अहंकार पर इस कीर्तन ने ऐसी चोट मारी कि उसका घमंड मटियामेट हो गया। गुरु नानक देव जी द्वारा रचित वाणी ने सुर और सुरति के मिलाप के साथ ऐसा कमाल दिखाया जो इस दुनिया के घातक हथियार भी नहीं दिखा सकते। गुरु जी जब भी भाई मरदाना जी को कहते, “मरदानिया! छेड़ रबाब, कोई सिफ्त खुदा के दीदार की करें” तो मरदाना जी रबाब बजाना आरम्भ करते और गुरु जी के मुखारविन्द से इलाही-वाणी का गायन शुरू हो जाता, जिससे भटके मन प्रभु, परमात्मा के चरणों में लीन हो जाते। गुरु जी द्वारा आरम्भ किया हुआ कीर्तन का दरिया कपटी
