As he travels through the first seven levels, Dante observes the sinners who are waiting for their release into Paradise, and through these encounters he is himself transformed into a stronger and better man. For it is only when he has learned from each of these levels that he can ascend to the gateway to Heaven: the Garden of Eden. The second part of one of the greatest epic poems, Purgatory is an enthralling Christian allegory of sin, redemption and ultimate enlightenment.
Review
“The English Dante of choice.” –Hugh Kenner

“Exactly what we have waited for these years, a Dante with clarity, eloquence, terror, and profoundly moving depths.” –Robert Fagles, Princeton University

“A marvel of fidelity to the original, of sobriety, and truly, of inspired poetry.” –Henri Peyre, Yale University
About the Author
Dante Alighieri was born in Florence in 1265 and belonged to a noble but impoverished family. The poem that survivesthe receding particulars of a given age and place soon becomes a shiftingkaleidoscope of perceptions, each of them in turn provisional and subject totime and change, and increasingly foreign to those horizons of human historythat fostered the original images and references.
Over the years of trying to approach Dante through the words he left and some ofthose written about him, I have come to wonder what his very name means now, andto whom. Toward the end of the Purgatorio, in which the journeyrepeatedly brings the pilgrim to reunions with poets, memories and projectionsof poets, the recurring names of poets, Beatrice, at a moment of unfathomableloss and exposure, calls the poem's narrator and protagonist by name, "Dante,"and the utterance of it is unaccountably startling and humbling. Even though itis spoken by that Beatrice who has been the sense and magnet of the whole poemand, as he has come to imagine it, of his life, and though it is heard at thetop of the mountain of Purgatory, with the terrible journey done and theprospect of eternal joy ahead, the sound of his name at that moment is not atall reassuring. Would it ever be? And who would it reassure? There was, andthere is, first of all, Dante the narrator. And there was Dante the man livingand suffering in time, and at once we can see that there is a distinction, adivision, between them. And then there was, and there is, Dante therepresentation of Everyman, of a brief period in the history of Italy and ofFlorence, of a philosophical position, a political allegiance ? the list isindeterminate. Sometimes he seems to be all of them at once, and sometimesparticular aspects occupy the foreground.
The commentaries date back into his own lifetime ? indeed, he begins themhimself, with the Vita Nuova ? and the exegetes recognized from thebeginning, whether they approved or not, the importance of the poem, the work,the vision, as they tried to arrive at some fixed significance in those words,in a later time when the words themselves were not quite the same.
Any reader of Dante now is in debt to generations of scholars working forcenturies to

EAN: 9780140444421

Package Dimensions: 7.7 x 5.2 x 0.9 inches

Languages: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0690/9968/4144/files/penguin-book-default-title-the-divine-comedy-volume-ii-purgatory-38680978030896.jpg?v=1753009867
divine-comedy-3-paradise
Divine Comedy 3 : Paradise

Author: Dante Alighieri

Brand: Penguin

Color: Multicolor

Edition: 3

Binding: Paperback

Format: Illustrated

Number Of Pages: 464

Release Date: 01-02-1986

Part Number: 9780140444438

Details: Dante relates his mystical interpretation of the heavens, and his moment of transcendent glory, as he journeys, first with Beatrice, then alone, toward the Trinity. Based on Saint-Exupéry's trail-blazing flights for the French airmail service over the Sahara and later, the Andes, these two novels evoke the tragic courage and nobility of the airborne pioneers who took enormous risks, flying in open cock-pits in planes that were often fragile and unstable.
About the Author
The French Writer and aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (1900-1944), was born in Lyon. His first two books, SOUTHERN MAIL and NIGHT FLIGHT, are distinguished by a poetic evocation of the romance and discipline of flying. Later works, including WIND, SAND AND STARS and FLIGHT TO ARRAS, stress his humanistic philosophy. Saint-Exupéry's popular children's book THE LITTLE PRINCE is also read by adults for its allegorical meaning. But a secondary examination revealed there was no cancer – he had won a ‘reprieve from death’ and had been thrown back into the world of the living.Faced with a repressive cultural environment and the threat of a spell in a prison farm, Gao fled Beijing. He travelled first to the ancient forests of central China and from there to the east coast, passing through eight provinces and seven nature reserves, a journey of fifteen thousand kilometres over a period of five months. The result of this epic voyage of discovery is ‘Soul Mountain’.Interwoven into this picaresque journey are myriad stories and countless memorable characters – from venerable Daoist masters and Buddhist monks and nuns to mythical Wild Men; deadly Qichun snakes to farting buses. Conventions are challenged, preconceptions are thwarted and the human condition, with all its foibles and triumphs, is laid bare.

EAN: 9780007119233

Package Dimensions: 7.7 x 5.1 x 1.7 inches

Languages: English, Chinese

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0690/9968/4144/files/flamingo-book-default-title-soul-mountain-38708017135920.jpg?v=1753010275
the-caterpillar-who-went-on-a-diet-and-other-stories-paperback-lal-ranjit
The Caterpillar Who Went on a Diet and Other Stories [Paperback] Lal, Ranjit

Author: Lal, Ranjit

Brand: Penguin

Binding: paperback

Number Of Pages: 194

Release Date: 01-12-2004

Details: A hilarious glimpse of the complex lives of insects These fourteen scintillating stories are marked by Ranjit Lal's usual combination of meticulous research, rollicking storytelling and fascinating characters. Ladoo Gulabjamun, one of the resident cockroaches of the famous Golden Thali Restaurant, decides to take on the management to impress his ladylove. Its king erred in killing the man I loved’ One of the world's masterpieces, The Cilappatikaram (5th century ce) by Ilanko Atikal is India's finest epic in a language other than Sanskrit. It spells out in unforgettable verse the problems that humanity has been wrestling with for a long time: love, war, evil, fate and death. The Tale of an Anklet is the love story of Kovalan and Kannaki. Originating in Tamil mythology, the compelling tale of Kannaki—her love, her feats and triumphs, and her ultimate transformation to goddess—follows the conventions of Tamil poetry and is told in three phases: the erotic, the heroic and the mythic. This epic ranks with the Ramayana and the Mahabharata as one of the great classics of Indian literature and is presented for the first time in a landmark English verse translation by the eminent poet R. Parthasarathy, making it accessible to a wider audience. Winner of the 1995 Sahitya Academy prize for Translation (English), the 1994 PEN/ Book-of-the-Month Club Translation Citation of the PEN American center, and the 1996 Association for Asian Studies A.K. This is evident in this collection of letters that Jawaharlal Nehru sent to his daughter Indira when she was 10 years old. This book, 'Letters from a Father to His Daughter' is a collection of 30 letters sent in the year 1928 which has become a phenomenal piece of literature over the years because it puts a lot of light on the bond between a father and his daughter and the many things that Pandit Nehru tried to explain to her while being away on business. Originally written in English, these letters are still relevant over a span of ninety years and that is exactly where their beauty lies. Diverse Letters
The collection of these letters spans over a large range and has many topics covered in it. Nehru began writing to his 10-year-old daughter when she was in Mussourie and he was in Allahabad. In order to tell his daughter about all the wonderful things in the world and his many thoughts on people and the society, he wrote her diverse letters that initially spoke of how the earth was formed, how animal and human life came into existence and how societies entered the fray. Nehru further also writes about races, faith and beliefs that existed in those times. The letters cover a major portion of human history and the history of India as well. Hardcover Book
This is one of the finest books published by Penguin India. The best thing about this book is that since it has stood the test of time and seems relevant ninety years later, it sure is something that can be handed down from one generation to another. For these reasons, Penguin has compiled the book in a rather solid manner with a hardcover. About the Author
Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of Independent India. These unforgettable tales—filled with sparkling wordplay and unbridled imagination—balance joyous nonsense with poignant moments of longing for the lost innocence of childhood.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. Not to forget those other irrepressible and immortal boys, Richmal Crompton’s William Brown, Mark Twain’s Tom Sawyer, RK Nararyan’s Swami and Ruskin Bond’s Rusty. Raised on a Sioux reservation, she was educated at boarding schools that enforced assimilation and was witness to major events in white-Indian relations in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Tapping her troubled personal history, Zitkala-Sa created stories that illuminate the tragedy and complexity of the American Indian experience. In evocative prose laced with political savvy, she forces new thinking about the perceptions, assumptions, and customs of both Sioux and white cultures and raises issues of assimilation, identity, and race relations that remain compelling today.
From Booklist
Sioux writer and activist Zitkala-Sa (1876-1938) was born in the year of the infamous Battle of Little Big Horn--her people's last victory over the invasion forces that would soon force them onto reservations, on one of which she grew up under a regime of forced assimilation. Her writing career blossomed early, with stories published in the
Atlantic Monthly when she was in her early twenties. She could have been a mere exotic, but she found a way to capture the interest of non-Indian readers, who preferred the romanticized noble savage to the often-sad reality of Indian life, and to give voice to her threatened culture. Her work, surprisingly, seems undated, perhaps because, unfortunately, the situation of Indian people has changed so little. This first comprehensive collection of her work, consisting of a significant sequence of mythic tales as well as memoirs and poetry, reveals Zitkala-Sa as a crusading, spiritually aware woman.
Patricia Monaghan

Copyright © American Library Association. The Ramayana is one of the best-known epics in the world—the tale of Rama, the prince of Ayodhya, who exiles himself to the forest for fourteen years to honor his father’s word. In the forest, Rama, his wife Sita and his brother Lakshmana meet new friends and unusual foes, and each day brings new adventures. But Ravana of Lanka, the king of demons, ruins it all by abducting Sita. To rescue her, Rama enlists the help of Hanuman and his monkey army. In the final battle many heroes die and new ones are born. In this fast-moving version for children, the ancient tale takes on new life. The traditional ingredients are all there—drama and excitement, gods and princes, love and war, infinite stories within stories, monkeys who cross oceans and carry mountains, shape-changing demons and bizarre monsters—but described with freshness and vitality by Bulbul Sharma. This contemporary retelling, which answers questions and provides explanations, is the perfect first Ramayana for everyone.

EAN: 9780143330318

Package Dimensions: 7.6 x 5.0 x 0.4 inches

Languages: english

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0690/9968/4144/files/puffin-books-book-default-title-ramayana-puffin-38799161295152.jpg?v=1753011383
winters-night-other-stories
Winters Night Other Stories

Brand: Puffin

Binding: paperback

EAN: 9780143330387

Package Dimensions: 8.7 x 5.5 x 0.8 inches

Languages: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0690/9968/4144/files/puffin-book-default-title-winters-night-other-stories-38799247835440.jpg?v=1753011436
shakuntala-and-other-stories-from-ancient-india-paperback-adithi-rao-paperback-adithi-rao
Shakuntala and Other Stories from Ancient India [Paperback] Adithi, Rao [Paperback] Adithi, Rao

Author: Rao Adithi (Author)

Details:

Product description

About the Author

After a BA in Theater from Smith College, USA, Adithi Rao returned to India to work as an assistant director on the award-winning Hindi cult film Satya. Enchanting and funny, these fantastical stories continue to delight each and every generation. With an inspiring written, inspiring introduction by Jonathan Stroud, author of the Bartimaeus trilogy, Just So Stories by Rudyard Kipling is one of the twelve wonderful classic stories being relaunched in Puffin Classics in March 2008.
From the Back Cover
How did the camel get his hump? Why won't cats do as they are told? Who invented reading and writing? How did an inquisitive little elephant change the lives of elephants everywhere? Kipling's imagined answers to such questions draw on the beast fables he heard as a child in India, as well as on folk games with language, exploring the relationships between thought, speech, and the written word. He also celebrates his own joy in fatherhood. The tales were told to his own and his friends' children over many years before he wrote them down, adding poems and his own illustrations. They invite older and younger readers to share a magical experience, each contributing to the other's pleasure, but each can also enjoy them alone, as more jokes, subtexts, and exotic references emerge with every reading. This fully illustrated edition includes two extra stories and Kipling's own explanation of the title.
About the Author
Joseph Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) was born in India, although educated in England.
