On entering the Society of Jesus and the age of twenty-four, he burnt all his poetry and ‘resolved to write no more, as not belonging to my profession, unless by the wish of my superiors.' The poems, letters, and journal entries selected for this edition were written in the following twenty years of his life and published posthumously in 1918. His verse is wrought from the creative tensions and paradoxes of a poet-priest who wanted to evoke the spiritual essence of nature sensuously, and to communicate this revelation in natural language and speech-rhythms while using condensed, innovative diction and all the skills of poetic artifice. Intense, vital, and individual, his writing is the ‘terrible crystal’ through which the soul—the inscape, the nature of things—may be illuminated.

EAN: 9780140420159

Package Dimensions: 7.7 x 5.0 x 0.9 inches

Languages: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0690/9968/4144/files/penguin-book-default-title-poems-and-prose-penguin-classics-38689224917296.jpg?v=1753009991
selected-poems-penguin-modern-classics
Selected Poems (Penguin Modern Classics)

Author: Luis Borges, Jorge

Brand: Penguin

Binding: Paperback

Number Of Pages: 496

Release Date: 07-09-2000

Part Number: 9780141181110

Details: A collection of poems.

EAN: 9780141181110

Package Dimensions: 7.7 x 5.2 x 0.9 inches

Languages: English, Spanish

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0690/9968/4144/files/penguin-book-default-title-selected-poems-penguin-modern-classics-38690106638640.jpg?v=1753010018
selected-poems
Selected Poems

Author: Azmi, Kaifi

Brand: Penguin

Binding: paperback

Number Of Pages: 176

Release Date: 01-12-2002

Part Number: 9780141004839

Details: A bilingual volume of some of Kaifi Azmi's finest poetry One of the finest Urdu poets of the subcontinent, Kaifi Azmi has borne witness to an entire era of social change. Born in 1918 in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, in a zamindar family, Azmi wrote his first poem at the age of eleven. He joined the Communist Party when he was nineteen, and wrote for the Party paper, Quami Jung. Subsequently, he moved to Bombay, and wrote his first lyric for the film Buzdil, directed by Shahid Latif, in 1948. A member of the Progressive Writers' movement, Azmi has been an active spokesperson for several workers' unions and works passionately to rectify social injustices even today. The richness of experience and maturity of perspective is captured in his poems, which reflect the many aspects of Azmi?man, lover, activist and poet. Some of his best verses are about the plight of the exploited, like the famous 'Makaan' which highlights a system where the poor, homeless footpath dwellers build palaces for the rich. At the other end of the spectrum are his love poems, including memorable lyrics for films that haunt the reader with their tenderness and contained passion. Azmi's preoccupation with such disparate themes are indicative as much of his zest for life as his sincerity and honesty of experience. Brilliantly translated by Pavan K. Varma, this bilingual selection brings to a wider audience the wisdom and lyricism of Azmi's poetry.

EAN: 9780141004839

Package Dimensions: 7.7 x 5.1 x 0.5 inches

Languages: english

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0690/9968/4144/files/penguin-book-default-title-selected-poems-38690127249712.jpg?v=1753010018
selected-poems-keats-penguin-classics-poetry-john-keats
Selected Poems: Keats (Penguin Classics: Poetry) John Keats

Author: Keats, John

Brand: Penguin

Color: Black

Edition: Latest Edition

Binding: Paperback

Number Of Pages: 320

Release Date: 27-11-2007

model number: 9780140424478

Part Number: 9780140424478

Details: Over the course of his short life, John Keats (1795-1821) honed a raw talent into a brilliant poetic maturity. 'Tableaux parisiens' portrays the brutal life of Paris's thieves, drunkards and prostitutes amid the debris of factories and poorhouses. In love poems such as 'Le Beau Navire', flights of lyricism entwine with languorous eroticism, while prose poems such as 'La Chambre Double' deal with the agonies of artistic creation and mortality. With their startling combination of harsh reality and sublime beauty, formal ingenuity and revolutionary poetic language, these poems, including a generous selection from Les Fleurs du Mal, show Baudelaire as one of the most influential poets of the nineteenth century.
From the Back Cover
Charles Baudelaire (1821-67) has proved to be the most influential of French nineteenth-century poets for the way in which his writing combines strong emotion, acute aesthetic sensibility and formal perfection with the everyday settings and language of the modern city. Based on the concept that the ability to create quality nonfiction is a skill that can be learned like any other, The Art of Nonfiction takes readers through the writing process, step-by-step, providing insightful observations and invaluable techniques along the way.
In these edited transcripts, Rand discusses the psychological aspects of writing, and the different roles played by the conscious and unconscious minds. Somehow, though, Rand's robust ego is less unbearable here than it is in, say, her
Art of Fiction.
This book is a frank demystification of the writing process that originated as a series of lectures given in 1969 to friends and other potential contributors to Rand's magazine, The Objectivist. "Any person who can speak English grammatically can learn to write nonfiction," Rand declares. All you need "is what you need for life in general: an orderly method of thinking." Rand values clarity above all else in nonfiction writing, and it is her own clearheadedness that makes this book appealing. Within these pages, Rand discusses subject and theme, audience, philosophy, outlines, writing, and editing. She takes swipes at The New Yorker for its "'brilliant' essays that say nothing," and at William Buckley, whose "trademark is to use words he probably spends half his time looking up in the dictionary." She rails against disruptions ("When I was writing Atlas Shrugged, I accepted neither day nor evening appointments, with rare exceptions, for roughly thirteen years"). And she is an exacting taskmaster who demands that you not choose a lesser aspect of a subject than "the deepest one that interests you and that you can do." Finally, says Rand, you must write from a position of complete confidence and omnipotence. "While you are writing," she says, "you must be God's perfect creature (if there were a God)." --Jane Steinberg
From Booklist
Some of the most compelling passages in
Journals of Ayn Rand (1997) are Rand's reflections on the craft of writing, a subject she attacks with her signature pragmatism in this useful and entertaining book about constructing nonfiction. Drawn from a series of talks she presented to friends and associates in 1969, these smart and pithy discussions are based on the belief that writing can be taught and learned like a science: no pining for the muse here. Rand talks knowledgeably and energetically about clarity, selectivity, style, organization, editing, the "squirms" (when writing just won't flow) and how to beat them: remind yourself that you're writing for your own pleasure. The short epigrammatic stanza form allowed poets of his day to express personal feelings, beliefs and doubts with wit and clarity, and Khayyam became one of its most accomplished masters with his touching meditations on the transience of human life and of the natural world. One of the supreme achievements of medieval literature, the reckless romanticism and the pragmatic fatalism in the face of death means these verses continue to hold the imagination of modern readers.
About the Author
Omar Khayyam is famous as a poet, astronomer and mathematician - he was one of the greatest mathematicians of the Middle Ages. This volume includes Franklin's reflections on such diverse questions as philosophy and religion, social status, electricity, American national characteristics, war, and the status of women. You may remember the inquiries I made among the remains of my relations when you were with me in England, and the journey I undertook for that purpose. Imagining it may be equally agreeable to you to know the circumstances of my life, many of which you are yet unacquainted with, and expecting the enjoyment of a week's uninterrupted leisure in my present country retirement, I sit down to write them for you. To which I have besides some other inducements. Having emerged from the poverty and obscurity in which I was born and bred, to a state of affluence and some degree of reputation in the world, and having gone so far through life with a considerable share of felicity, the conducing means I made use of, which with the blessing of God so well succeeded, my posterity may like to know, as they may find some of them suitable to their own situations, and therefore fit to be imitated.

That felicity, when I reflected on it, has induced me sometimes to say, that were it offered to my choice, I should have no objection to a repetition of the same life from its beginning, only asking the advantages authors have in a second edition to correct some faults of the first. So I might, besides correcting the faults, change some sinister accidents and events of it for others more favorable. But though this were denied, I should still accept the offer. Since such a repetition is not to be expected, the next thing most like living one's life over again seems to be a recollection of that life, and to make that recollection as durable as possible by putting it down in writing.

Hereby, too, I shall indulge the inclination so natural in old men, to be talking of themselves and their own past actions; and I shall indulge it without being tiresome to others, who, through respect to age, might conceive themselves obliged to give me a hearing, since this may be read or not as any one pleases. And, lastly (I may as well confess it, since my denial of it will be believed by nobody), perhaps I shall a good deal gratify my own vanity. Indeed, I scarce ever heard or saw the introductory words, Without vanity I may say, etc., but some vain thing immediately followed. It includes generous selections from all the established giants - among them Baudelaire, Verlaine, Rimbaud and Breton - as well as works from a wide variety of less well-known poets such as Claudel and Cendrars, whose innovations proved vital to the progress of poetry in France. The significant literary schools of the time are also represented in sections focusing on such movements as Romanticism, Symbolism, Cubism and Surrealism. Only twenty-one of her poems were published during her lifetime - this volume contains those and all others attributed to her. Other visionary works, including 'Remembrance' and 'No coward soul is mine', boldly confront mortality and anticipate life after death. And poems such as 'Redbreast early in the morning' and 'The blue bell is the sweetest flower' evoke the wild beauties of nature she observed on the Yorkshire moors, while also examining the state of her psyche.

EAN: 9780140423525

Package Dimensions: 7.8 x 5.1 x 1.1 inches

Languages: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0690/9968/4144/files/penguin-book-default-title-the-complete-poems-penguin-classics-38739724075312.jpg?v=1753010607
modern-classics-selected-poems-penguin-modern-classics-leishman-j-b-and-rilke-rainer-maria
Modern Classics Selected Poems (Penguin Modern Classics) Leishman, J B and Rilke, Rainer Maria

Author: Rilke, Rainer Maria

Brand: Penguin

Binding: paperback

Number Of Pages: 96

Release Date: 22-02-2001

Part Number: 9780141183497

Details: A collection of author's poems that range from objective, naturalistic descriptions to the effusive outpourings of half-religious ecstasy and anguish.

EAN: 9780141183497

Package Dimensions: 7.7 x 5.1 x 0.3 inches

Languages: English, German

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0690/9968/4144/files/penguin-book-default-title-modern-classics-selected-poems-penguin-modern-classics-leishman-j-b-and-rilke-rainer-maria-38740259832112.jpg?v=1753010622
puffin-book-of-poetry-for-children-paperback-souza-eunice-de-and-silgardo-melanie
Puffin Book of Poetry for Children [Paperback] Souza, Eunice De and Silgardo, Melanie

Author: Souza, Eunice De & Silgardo, Melanie (Ed

Brand: Penguin

Binding: Paperback

Number Of Pages: 168

Release Date: 01-12-2005

Details: No other form of art can capture the range and diversity of human experience the way a poem can. Ruskin Bond's travel writing is unlike what is found in most travelogues, because he will take you to the smaller, lesser-known corners of the country, acquaint you with the least-famous locals there, and describe the flora and fauna that others would have missed. And if the place is well known, Ruskin leaves the common tourist spots to find a small alley or shop where he finds colourful characters to engage in conversation. Tales of the Open Road is a collection of Ruskin Bond's travel writing over fifty years. Here, you will encounter a tonga ride through the Shivaliks, a hidden waterfall near Rishikesh, walks along the myriad streets of Delhi (one of which used to be the richest in Asia), trips down the Grand Trunk Road, stopovers in little tea stalls in the hills around Mussoorie, and an excursion to the icy source of the Ganga at over ten thousand feet above sea level. Enriched by rare photographs that Ruskin took during his travels, Tales of the Open Road is a celebration of small-town and rural India by its most engaging chronicler.

EAN: 9780144000722

Package Dimensions: 6.8 x 4.6 x 0.6 inches

Languages: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0690/9968/4144/files/penguin-book-default-title-tales-of-the-open-road-38780007514416.jpg?v=1753011038
selected-poems-penguin-classics-robert-burns
Selected Poems (Penguin Classics) Robert Burns

Author: Burns, R

Brand: Penguin

Color: Black

Binding: Paperback

Number Of Pages: 368

Release Date: 01-05-1994

Part Number: 9780140423822

Details: Product Description
This selection gives equal weight to the two aspects of Robert Burns's reputation, as a lyricist and as a much-loved Scottish poet. Placing works in probable order of composition, it includes lyrics to his most well known songs, such as the nostalgic Auld Lang Syne, the romantic A Red, Red Rose, and the patriotic Scots What Hae. As a poet, Burns wrote with deceptive simplicity and imaginative sympathy, and demonstrated enormous range - from comic dramatic monologues such as Holy Willie's Prayer, which mocks hypocrisy, to narratives including the celebrated Tam O' Shanter, about the ghostly visions of a drunk.
Review
Address To A Haggis
Address To Beelzebub
Address To The Deil
Address To The Unco Guid, Or The Rigidly Righteous
Afton Water
The Auld Farmer's New Year Morning Salutation ... This compelling collection of the best and most enjoyable poems from the era includes tightly argued lyrics, erotic and libertine considerations of love, divine poems and elegies of lament by such great figures as John Donne, George Herbert, Andrew Marvell and John Milton, alongside pieces from many other less well known but equally fascinating poets of the age, such as Anne Bradstreet, Katherine Philips and Thomas Traherne. Widely varied in theme, all are characterized by their use of startling metaphors, imagery and language to express the uncertainty of an age, and a profound desire for originality that was to prove deeply influential on later poets and in particular poets of the Modernist movement such as T. S. Eliot.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. Beginning in 1952 with selections from Nissim Ezekiel's first volume of poetry which was published in London, it honours the canonical writers who have come to define modern Indian poetry―influential craftsmen such as Nissim Ezekiel, Dom Moraes and Arun Kolatkar, who died within months of each other in 2004―and reinstates neglected or forgotten figures such as Lawrence Bantleman, Gopal Honnalgere, Srinivas Rayaprol and G.S. Sharat Chandra. The collection also introduces an astonishing range of contemporary poets who live and work in various parts of the world and in India. There are writers from Bombay and Berkeley, from New Delhi and New York, from Melbourne, Montana, Aarhus, Allahabad, Hong Kong, Sheffield, Connecticut and Itanagar, among other places―writers who have never shared a stage together but have more in common than their far-flung locations would suggest. Also included in the volume is Bruce King's elegiac essay, '2004: Ezekiel, Moraes, Kolatkar', and Arvind Krishna Mehrotra's meditation on 'What Is an Indian Poem?' An essential feature of 60 Indian Poets is a set of rare and remarkable portraits by Madhu Kapparath. This definitive anthology aims for 'verticality' rather than chronology. Exhaustive, and stunning in its scale and vitality, it represents a community 'separated by the sea' and connected too―in familial ways―by the unlikely histories of a shared English language.

EAN: 9780143064428

Package Dimensions: 8.5 x 5.6 x 1.3 inches

Languages: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0690/9968/4144/files/penguin-book-default-title-60-indian-poets-paperback-jeet-thayil-38803349537072.jpg?v=1753011926
what-am-i-doing-here
What Am I Doing Here?

Author: Chatwin, Bruce

Brand: Vintage Classics

Binding: Paperback

Number Of Pages: 384

Release Date: 03-12-1998

Part Number: 15138678

Details: In this collection of profiles, essays and travel stories, Chatwin takes us to Benin, where he is arrested as a mercenary during a coup; and to Nepal where he reminds us that 'Man's real home is not a house, but the Road, and that life itself is a journey to be walked on foot'

EAN: 9780099769811

Package Dimensions: 7.7 x 5.1 x 1.1 inches

Languages: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0690/9968/4144/files/vintage-classics-book-default-title-what-am-i-doing-here-38803391807792.jpg?v=1753011949
selected-poems-donne-penguin-classics
Selected Poems: Donne (Penguin Classics)

Author: Donne, John

Brand: Penguin

Color: Black

Binding: Paperback

Number Of Pages: 336

Release Date: 27-03-2007

Part Number: 9780140424409

Details: Product Description
Showcasing the creative power of one of the most outstanding English Metaphysical Poets, the Penguin Classics edition of John Donne's Selected Poems includes an introduction and notes by Ilona Bell.Regarded by many as the greatest of the Metaphysical poets, John Donne was also among the most intriguing figures of the Renaissance. A sensualist who composed erotic and playful love poetry in his youth, he was raised a Catholic but later became one of the most admired Protestant preachers of his time. The Selected Poems reflects this wide diversity, and includes his youthful Songs and Sonnets, epigrams, elegies, letters, satires, and the profoundly moving Divine Poems composed towards the end of his life. From joyful poems such as 'The Flea', which transforms the image of a louse into something marvellous, to the intimate and intense Holy Sonnets, Donne breathed new vigour into poetry by drawing lucid and often startling metaphors from the world in which he lived. His poems remain among the most passionate, profound and spiritual in the English language.Ilona Bell's introduction considers Donne's life, faith and influence. This edition also includes detailed notes and a further reading list.John Donne (1572-1631) was born into a family of devout Catholics. He studied at Oxford University, travelled on the continent, and then studied law at Lincoln's Inn. In the early 1600s Donne became a Member of Parliament and Justice of the Peace, obtaining temporary positions and patronage from a number of aristocrats who are the subjects of his poems. He was ordained as an Anglican minister in 1615, and in 1621 was made Dean of St. Paul's Cathedral, a position he held until his death.If you enjoyed Donne's Selected Poems, you might enjoy John Milton's Paradise Lost, also available in Penguin Classics.
About the Author
John Donne (1572-1631) was the most outstanding of the English Metaphysical Poets and a churchman famous for his spellbinding sermons.Ilona Bell is Professor of English Literature at Williams College, Massachusetts.
