As he travels through the first seven levels, Dante observes the sinners who are waiting for their release into Paradise, and through these encounters he is himself transformed into a stronger and better man. For it is only when he has learned from each of these levels that he can ascend to the gateway to Heaven: the Garden of Eden. The second part of one of the greatest epic poems, Purgatory is an enthralling Christian allegory of sin, redemption and ultimate enlightenment.
Review
“The English Dante of choice.” –Hugh Kenner

“Exactly what we have waited for these years, a Dante with clarity, eloquence, terror, and profoundly moving depths.” –Robert Fagles, Princeton University

“A marvel of fidelity to the original, of sobriety, and truly, of inspired poetry.” –Henri Peyre, Yale University
About the Author
Dante Alighieri was born in Florence in 1265 and belonged to a noble but impoverished family. The poem that survivesthe receding particulars of a given age and place soon becomes a shiftingkaleidoscope of perceptions, each of them in turn provisional and subject totime and change, and increasingly foreign to those horizons of human historythat fostered the original images and references.
Over the years of trying to approach Dante through the words he left and some ofthose written about him, I have come to wonder what his very name means now, andto whom. Toward the end of the Purgatorio, in which the journeyrepeatedly brings the pilgrim to reunions with poets, memories and projectionsof poets, the recurring names of poets, Beatrice, at a moment of unfathomableloss and exposure, calls the poem's narrator and protagonist by name, "Dante,"and the utterance of it is unaccountably startling and humbling. Even though itis spoken by that Beatrice who has been the sense and magnet of the whole poemand, as he has come to imagine it, of his life, and though it is heard at thetop of the mountain of Purgatory, with the terrible journey done and theprospect of eternal joy ahead, the sound of his name at that moment is not atall reassuring. Would it ever be? And who would it reassure? There was, andthere is, first of all, Dante the narrator. Based on Saint-Exupéry's trail-blazing flights for the French airmail service over the Sahara and later, the Andes, these two novels evoke the tragic courage and nobility of the airborne pioneers who took enormous risks, flying in open cock-pits in planes that were often fragile and unstable.
About the Author
The French Writer and aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (1900-1944), was born in Lyon. His first two books, SOUTHERN MAIL and NIGHT FLIGHT, are distinguished by a poetic evocation of the romance and discipline of flying. He also sells second hand books and dispenses wisdom to his customers. All of the main characters of the novel have this shop as their common local haunt and Mr. Rangoonwalla interacts with these residents of Delhi when they visit his shop and at times gives them his words of wisdom. They come to him for tea, books, conversation, and advice.
The story is about a plethora of characters, each from a different strata of society and different background. These customers are Brighu, passionate for obscure collectibles and a real love life, Shintu, the newly-married on a quest of the ultimate aphrodisiac, and Digital Dutta, a person mostly torn between an H-1B visa and Karl Marx. Dutta is portrayed as a man who lives in his head.
Each of these characters has a story of his own and the author ties them together in a brilliant manner for his book. While narrating their stories, Banerjee subtly touches the greyer shades of their lives and presents them vividly to the reader. The entire novel has been captured in the corridors of contemporary Connaught Place in Delhi and Calcutta. Various pictures and objects have been shown in the background frame and the author ensures to refer them, thereby touching upon the different cultural references.
Sarnath Banerjee presents a different flavor to the art of storytelling by mixing various other art forms such as sketches, illustrations, and photographs. These heighten the impact on the reader in a beautiful way. The author uses an imaginative alchemy of words and images, of a script and artwork, to present the alienation and fragmented reality of the Indian urban life. Part travel diary, part philosophy, part love story, ‘Soul Mountain’ is an elegant, unforgettable novel that journeys deep into the heart of modern-day China. In 1982 Chinese playwright, novelist and artist Gao Xingjian was diagnosed with lung cancer, the very disease that had killed his father. For six weeks Gao inhabited a transcendental state of imminent death, treating himself to the finest foods he could afford while spending time reading in an old graveyard in the Beijing suburbs. But a secondary examination revealed there was no cancer – he had won a ‘reprieve from death’ and had been thrown back into the world of the living.Faced with a repressive cultural environment and the threat of a spell in a prison farm, Gao fled Beijing. He travelled first to the ancient forests of central China and from there to the east coast, passing through eight provinces and seven nature reserves, a journey of fifteen thousand kilometres over a period of five months. The result of this epic voyage of discovery is ‘Soul Mountain’.Interwoven into this picaresque journey are myriad stories and countless memorable characters – from venerable Daoist masters and Buddhist monks and nuns to mythical Wild Men; deadly Qichun snakes to farting buses. Conventions are challenged, preconceptions are thwarted and the human condition, with all its foibles and triumphs, is laid bare.

EAN: 9780007119233

Package Dimensions: 7.7 x 5.1 x 1.7 inches

Languages: English, Chinese

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0690/9968/4144/files/flamingo-book-default-title-soul-mountain-38708017135920.jpg?v=1753010275
the-caterpillar-who-went-on-a-diet-and-other-stories-paperback-lal-ranjit
The Caterpillar Who Went on a Diet and Other Stories [Paperback] Lal, Ranjit

Author: Lal, Ranjit

Brand: Penguin

Binding: paperback

Number Of Pages: 194

Release Date: 01-12-2004

Details: A hilarious glimpse of the complex lives of insects These fourteen scintillating stories are marked by Ranjit Lal's usual combination of meticulous research, rollicking storytelling and fascinating characters. Its king erred in killing the man I loved’ One of the world's masterpieces, The Cilappatikaram (5th century ce) by Ilanko Atikal is India's finest epic in a language other than Sanskrit. It spells out in unforgettable verse the problems that humanity has been wrestling with for a long time: love, war, evil, fate and death. The Tale of an Anklet is the love story of Kovalan and Kannaki. Originating in Tamil mythology, the compelling tale of Kannaki—her love, her feats and triumphs, and her ultimate transformation to goddess—follows the conventions of Tamil poetry and is told in three phases: the erotic, the heroic and the mythic. This epic ranks with the Ramayana and the Mahabharata as one of the great classics of Indian literature and is presented for the first time in a landmark English verse translation by the eminent poet R. Parthasarathy, making it accessible to a wider audience. This is evident in this collection of letters that Jawaharlal Nehru sent to his daughter Indira when she was 10 years old. This book, 'Letters from a Father to His Daughter' is a collection of 30 letters sent in the year 1928 which has become a phenomenal piece of literature over the years because it puts a lot of light on the bond between a father and his daughter and the many things that Pandit Nehru tried to explain to her while being away on business. Originally written in English, these letters are still relevant over a span of ninety years and that is exactly where their beauty lies. Diverse Letters
The collection of these letters spans over a large range and has many topics covered in it. Nehru began writing to his 10-year-old daughter when she was in Mussourie and he was in Allahabad. In order to tell his daughter about all the wonderful things in the world and his many thoughts on people and the society, he wrote her diverse letters that initially spoke of how the earth was formed, how animal and human life came into existence and how societies entered the fray. Nehru further also writes about races, faith and beliefs that existed in those times. The letters cover a major portion of human history and the history of India as well. Hardcover Book
This is one of the finest books published by Penguin India. The best thing about this book is that since it has stood the test of time and seems relevant ninety years later, it sure is something that can be handed down from one generation to another. For these reasons, Penguin has compiled the book in a rather solid manner with a hardcover. About the Author
Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of Independent India. Born on November 14, 1889, he was one of the most prominent political figures when India was at the peak of its struggle for freedom. Nehru was an alumnus of the Trinity College, Cambridge. Knoepflmacher considers the fairy-tale allusions and literary touchstones that place the book among the major works of Victorian literature, and shows it to be an exceptionally rich and resonant novel.

EAN: 9780142437018

Package Dimensions: 7.6 x 5.1 x 0.6 inches

Languages: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0690/9968/4144/files/penguin-book-default-title-little-princess-38739445023024.jpg?v=1753010597
the-lake-of-sharks-tintin
The Lake of Sharks (Tintin)

Author: Michel Regnier

Brand: CASTERMAN

Edition: New edition

Features:

Binding : paperback

Language : English

Publication Date : 2018-12-09

Authors : Herge

Binding: paperback

Number Of Pages: 64

Release Date: 01-01-2013

model number: 2724288966848

Part Number: 2724288966848

Details: Tintin is sent to guard Professor Calculus, but a local criminal tries to lure him away by kidnapping two children.
