The only difference is that the opening and closing backstory that pads out Who Moved My Cheese? for Teens involves a group of teenagers kibbutzing in the cafeteria, not a group of adults attending their high school reunion.
Of course, it's hard to argue with the essence of Johnson's commonsense message: one of the few constants in life is change, and the sooner we learn to anticipate and adjust to change, the happier we'll be. But most criticisms of the book (and there have been many) boil down to the fact that Cheese is just too reductive and simplistic, and sometimes change in our lives can and should be resisted. (It hasn't helped that the book's popularity among corporate managers has come to be associated with layoffs... er, cheese removals.) But whatever your take on Johnson's philosophy, you'd do well to keep it to yourself. Otherwise, you can count on your teenager to form the exact opposite opinion. (Ages 12 and older) --Paul Hughes
From Booklist
Gr. 7-12. Toss out the chicken soup, here comes the cheese. Pretty much the same as the best-seller for adults on which it is based, this short book begins with several teens sitting around talking. One kid's life has been changed by the parable about two mice, two "Littlepeople," and cheese. The bulk of the book then relates the story: the foursome is in a maze chasing cheese. They find cheese. The cheese runs out. The mice, Sniffy and Scurry, recognize the inevitability of change and are prepared to find more cheese. The Littlepeople, Hem and Haw, are not. Their fear and procrastination nearly brings them to ruin before they learn the book's many lessons: "Movement in a new direction helps you find cheese"; and the more direct, "When you stop being afraid, you feel good"; and the evocative, "Imagine yourself eating your new cheese." It's hard not to picture teens howling at this. The final scene, in which the teens discuss the messages, as if they aren't clear enough, is particularly, well . . . cheesy. "Do you guys think that Hem ever changed and found his new cheese?" asks one boy. Why buy this at all? Never underestimate the power of marketing . . . or "the power of cheese." There may be demand.
Ilene Cooper

Copyright © American Library Association.
