In 1790, at age 30, he inherited the position of polygar of Panchalankurichi. His argument with Collector Jackson of Thirunelveli over taxes and his brave warfare, supported by enthusiastic but irregular and ill-equipped soldiers, against the powerful British army is now part of folklore. He was ultimately captured and hanged in 1799.
