He graduated and post-graduated from Madras University and earned his doctorate from Karnataka University in 1976. Dr. Sampath also holds Post Graduate Diplomas in Geography, Anthropology, and Sanskrit from Madras University. He served as an Epigraphist in various prestigious institutions, including the Department of Archaeology, Govt. of Madras, the French Institute of Indology, Pondicherry, University of Mysore, and the Archaeological Survey of India. He retired as the Director of Epigraphy at the Archaeological Survey of India.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDr. Sampath has made significant contributions to epigraphy, archaeology, art and architecture, political history, socio-economic history, and religious history. He has authored numerous research papers and edited several important volumes such as \u003cem\u003eEpigraphia Carnatica\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003eSouth Indian Inscriptions\u003c\/em\u003e. His work on Tamil and Kannada epigraphy is highly regarded.
