The subsequent stories delve upon a Sufi saint, Muhammad Daraz, a Persian immigrant, Mohammad Gawan, Rama Raya, a general in the Vijayanagara Empire, Malik Ambar, an Ethiopian slave, Sant Tukaram, a Marathi poet, Papadu, a Telangana rebel, and Tarabai, a Maratha queen. All these people lived in differing social conditions in the same region at different periods of history.
