Sajjad Haider Yildirim (1880-1943) is the one who initiated a new tradition in Urdu prose and narrative literature in the 20th century. His stories and novels express a rebellious sensitivity. With his creative talent and energy, he gave Urdu modern tones and voices, representing the era-consciousness for the overall development of Indian society. His novels, such as Salis Bilkhair and Zohra, are based on Turkish novels. His writing helped shape the environment in which greater emphasis was placed on the aesthetic aspect of literature.
The author of this essay, Prof. Dr. Suraiya Hussain (born 1927), completed her Ph.D. from Sorbonne University, Paris. She is a well-known writer and critic of Urdu literature.
